Roughly seven in ten carts never become orders. Some of that is window shopping you cannot fix — but a large share abandons for reasons that are documented, boring, and entirely under your control. Work this list before buying another recovery tool.
1. Kill the surprise costs
The most-cited abandonment reason is extra costs appearing at checkout — shipping, taxes, fees. Fixes: show shipping estimates on the cart page (or product page for flat rates), be upfront about taxes, and if margins allow, fold shipping into prices and say “free shipping” — the phrase converts better than the discount it represents. Never let the checkout total be the first honest number a buyer sees.
2. Never force an account
“Create an account to continue” is where first-time buyers leave. Enable guest checkout in WooCommerce settings, and offer account creation after the purchase — one optional checkbox once payment is done. The order matters: commitment first, convenience after.
3. Strip checkout friction
Audit every field: company name, order notes, a second address line — each one you remove raises completion. Enable address autocomplete, keep coupon fields collapsed (a big empty coupon box sends buyers off hunting for codes), and make the checkout fast — on the payment step, every second of load measurably costs orders. A distraction-free checkout template (no full nav, no sidebar) keeps the buyer pointed forward.
4. Put trust where the doubt happens
The checkout is where scepticism peaks. Visible security cues, recognisable payment options (cards, PayPal, wallets — buyers abandon when their method is missing), a plain returns line (“30-day returns, no questions”) directly on the payment step. Reassurance placed elsewhere on the site does not transfer; it has to be in the buyer’s eyeline at the moment of doubt.
5. Then recover what still slips
With causes fixed, recovery emails do the remainder: first email within an hour (“your cart is saved”), a second next day, perhaps a modest incentive in a final note — sparingly, or you train customers to abandon for coupons. Track your abandonment rate before and after each change; on most stores this list is worth more than any redesign. It is also exactly what our WooCommerce service optimises first.
