A block theme for writers, built around the margin.

== Description ==

Marginalia is a block theme for people whose site is mostly words. It is built around three ideas.

The margin is part of the page. Give any paragraph, quote, image, list or group the Sidenote block style and it moves out into the margin beside the text it follows, where it can be read without leaving the sentence. On a narrow screen it steps back into the column with a rule down its left edge — nothing is hidden, nothing is numbered, nothing has to be clicked.

The archive is an index. Date, title and subject on one row with a hairline rule between, like the contents of a book. It reads as a designed page with no featured images at all, which is how most writing sites actually look.

A style variation is a whole personality. The four that ship change the typeface, the type scale, the spacing rhythm and the weight of the rules, not just the colours: Marginalia (warm paper, Newsreader), Press (newspaper, condensed Archivo headlines), Terminal (dark, IBM Plex Mono throughout) and Letter (cream, Fraunces and Literata, letterpress).

Every typeface is bundled with the theme and served from your own site, so no request goes to Google or anywhere else.

Features:

* Sidenote block style for paragraphs, quotes, images, lists and groups
* Index-list archive, plus a grid alternative as a pattern
* A sticky rail of post metadata beside the article
* Four style variations that change type, scale, rhythm and rules
* Drop cap, line length, sidenote placement and link underlines in Appearance > Marginalia
* Fonts hosted inside the theme, with no external requests
* Skip link, visible focus and reduced-motion support

== Installation ==

1. In your admin, go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme, choose the theme zip, then Install and Activate.
2. Go to Appearance > Editor > Styles to pick one of the four style variations and to change colours, typefaces and sizes.
3. Go to Appearance > Marginalia for the four reading choices the editor has no control for.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= How do I make a sidenote? =

Select a paragraph, quote, image, list or group in the editor, open the Styles tab in the block sidebar and choose Sidenote. On a wide screen the block moves into the margin; below 1100 pixels it returns to the column.

= Can I keep notes in the column on every screen? =

Yes. Appearance > Marginalia > Sidenotes > Always in the column.

= Where are the colours and fonts? =

Appearance > Editor > Styles, like any block theme. Appearance > Marginalia only holds the few things that have no control there, and links back to the editor for the rest.

= Do I need a plugin? =

No. The theme uses core blocks only, adds no post types and no shortcodes, and does not recommend anything.

= Does the theme load anything from another server? =

No. The typefaces are inside the theme and are served from your own domain.

== Changelog ==

= 1.0.0 =
* First release. Eight templates, four style variations, ten patterns and the Sidenote, Index list, Grid and Rail block styles.
* Accessibility: no axe violations across six page types in all four variations, and every text colour at 4.5:1 or better on its background.
* Six typefaces bundled and served from your own site.

= 0.2.0 =
* Every template: home, single, page, archive, search, 404 and a blank template with no header or footer.
* Three style variations beside the default — Press, Terminal and Letter — each changing the typefaces, the scale and the weight of the rules, not only the colours.
* A pattern library: two headers, a footer with a colophon line, the index list, a grid of cards, an about page, a colophon page, a sidenote, a pull quote and a follow section.
* Appearance > Marginalia gained a Post lists choice: an index or a grid.

= 0.1.0 =
* First scaffold: theme.json, bundled typefaces, the Sidenote, Index list and Rail block styles, the index template, header and footer parts, and Appearance > Marginalia.
